Quantitative companion — four-way comparison, Effingers Ch. 25 ("Frühling")
Machine-readable data layer for the four-way study (A · B · C · H), built for direct charting. Grounded strictly in the German source and the four translations — no internet, no use of the personas/pass logs. Observational, not a ranking; all four are co-equal columns. Tables first, then a mirroring JSON block.
Scope & method. 40 divergence loci were coded — places where the German leaves a genuine choice. Each locus is partitioned by the same salient choice (agreement = same wording/strategy, coded at the lexical level: two arms "agree" only when they make the same concrete choice, e.g. both write "carriage"). Two judgment notes, stated honestly: (1) which loci to include and how to group at the margins is a coder decision (one defensible coding of several); (2) H has no notes, so all of H's values are read directly from the published text — they are observations of the finished text, not inferences about intent. Where a single underlying feature feeds both the loci set and the foreignisation tests (e.g. dialect), that overlap is intentional (two views of the same evidence). The foreignisation scale (Table 3) is a constructed composite (equal-weighted mean of five countable tests); 0 = keeps the German, 100 = naturalises into English.

Partition-pattern tally (of 40 loci, verified — sums to 40):
| partition | structure | count | loci |
|---|---|---|---|
| {A,B,C}|{H} | H alone — the cluster pattern | 18 | refrain-wording/-layout, suesse, widerklee, privatdozent, streets, einverstanden, frauenliebe, feuerzauber, lyric-rhyme, praemie, ochsen, baerenhunger, schaem-dich, dialect-register, maetresse, feierabend, syntax |
| {A,C,H}|{B} | B alone | 4 | annettchen, du-letter, spelling, geliebte |
| {A,B,H}|{C} | C alone | 2 | schloss, molle |
| {A}|{B,C,H} | A alone (keeps German) | 2 | bruecke, kloster |
| {A,H}|{B,C} | A+H vs B+C | 2 | coupe, das-recht |
| {A,B}|{C,H} · {A,C}|{B,H} | other two-pair splits | 2 | schlafbursche, reh |
| {X,Y}|{Z}|{H or other} | one pair + two singletons | 9 | pub, hammelbeine, kasinotoilette, volksbegeisterung, wache, querpfeifer, erfolg, ueberspannt, lied-davon |
| {A}|{B}|{C}|{H} | all four differ | 1 | daemel |
(The authoritative partition per locus is the groups column in Table 1; this tally is computed from it. Only 18/40 follow the clean {A,B,C}|{H} pattern because this set deliberately includes every cross-cutting split found — a harder test of clustering than a representative sample, in which {A,B,C}|{H} would dominate more.)
Table 2 — Pairwise agreement (across the 40 loci)
4×4 matrix — counts (loci in agreement; diagonal n/a):
| A | B | C | H | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| A | — | 22 | 25 | 8 |
| B | 22 | — | 27 | 5 |
| C | 25 | 27 | — | 8 |
| H | 8 | 5 | 8 | — |
4×4 matrix — percentage (count / 40):
| A | B | C | H | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| A | — | 55.0 | 62.5 | 20.0 |
| B | 55.0 | — | 67.5 | 12.5 |
| C | 62.5 | 67.5 | — | 20.0 |
| H | 20.0 | 12.5 | 20.0 | — |
Six pairs (long form):
| pair | type | count /40 | percent |
|---|---|---|---|
| B–C | AI–AI | 27 | 67.5 |
| A–C | AI–AI | 25 | 62.5 |
| A–B | AI–AI | 22 | 55.0 |
| A–H | AI–human | 8 | 20.0 |
| C–H | AI–human | 8 | 20.0 |
| B–H | AI–human | 5 | 12.5 |
Read-off (observational).
- AI–AI mean ≈ 61.7% (B–C 67.5 > A–C 62.5 > A–B 55.0) vs AI–H mean ≈ 17.5% — a ~3.5× gap. The three AI arms cluster; H is distant from all three.
- B–C is the tightest pair (67.5%); the within-AI order (B–C > A–C > A–B) is the same as in the earlier 27-locus coding.
- No AI arm is meaningfully closer to H than the others: A–H = C–H = 8 (20.0%), B–H = 5 (12.5%). Under this larger, lexically-stricter set, A's slim "closest-to-H" edge in the 27-locus coding disappears (it had hinged partly on a strategy-level reading of Hammelbeine; here A and H share the same wording at only 2 loci —
coupe,das-recht— and C–H share 3). This sharpens, rather than weakens, the qualitative result that A does not specifically resemble H. - Percentages here are lower than the 27-locus version (where B–C was 81%) because this set adds many cross-cutting loci by design; the ordering and the AI≫H gap are stable across both codings.
Table 3 — Foreignising (0) ↔︎ domesticating (100)
Five countable tests. For each, the cell shows count of the domesticating choice / items scored; the fraction (count/total) feeds the composite. Higher = more naturalised into English.
| test | what is counted (domesticating = …) | items | A | B | C | H |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| T1 proper-nouns | place/proper nouns anglicised (vs German kept) | 5 | 0 | 2 | 3 | 4 |
| T2 loanwords-titles | foreign words & titles naturalised into English (vs kept) | 6 | 4 | 3 | 2 | 4 |
| T3 dialect | eye-dialect tokens (phonetic respelling); ÷ max observed (10) | 10 | 0 | 0 | 3 | 10 |
| T4 refrain | refrain fused into prose (vs kept as a beat) | 1 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 1 |
| T5 idioms | figures rendered as English equivalents (vs literal/calque) | 4 | 1 | 1 | 1 | 4 |
Test fractions (domesticating share, 0–1):
| test | A | B | C | H |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| T1 proper-nouns | 0.00 | 0.40 | 0.60 | 0.80 |
| T2 loanwords-titles | 0.67 | 0.50 | 0.33 | 0.67 |
| T3 dialect | 0.00 | 0.00 | 0.30 | 1.00 |
| T4 refrain | 0.00 | 0.00 | 0.00 | 1.00 |
| T5 idioms | 0.25 | 0.25 | 0.25 | 1.00 |
Composite score (mean of the five fractions × 100):
| A | B | C | H | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| foreignising ↔︎ domesticating (0–100) | 18 | 23 | 30 | 89 |
Basis of each test (what was scored):
- T1 proper-nouns (5 items): streets -straße kept vs -strasse · Weidendammer Brücke kept vs "Bridge" · Graues Kloster kept vs translated · Schloss kept vs "Palace" · die Widerklee "The…" kept vs dropped. — Anglicised count: A 0, B 2, C 3, H 4.
- T2 loanwords & titles (6 items): coupé kept vs "carriage" · Taburett "tabouret" kept vs "stool/footstool" · Molle kept vs "beer" · Privatdozent kept vs "lecturer" · Annettchen kept vs "dear little Annette" · song-titles kept German vs translated to English. — Naturalised count: A 4, B 3, C 2, H 4.
- T3 dialect (eye-dialect tokens counted in the working-class lines): A 0, B 0, C 3 (Aw, Naw, 'cause), H 10 (Paulie, haff, Lettit, leggo, yer, Can'tcha, goin', 'cause, d'you×2). Normalised to the highest observed count (H = 10).
- T4 refrain (1 item): fused into the adjacent paragraph (domesticating continuity) vs kept on its own line (montage beat). A/B/C 0, H 1.
- T5 idioms (4 items): Bärenhunger "hungry as a bear" vs "famished" · cradle idiom kept vs "no one told me" · Hammelbeine "mutton-legs" vs an English equivalent · ein Lied davon "sing a song" vs "thing or two/tale". — English-equivalent count: A 1, B 1, C 1, H 4.
Read-off (observational). A clean monotone gradient A (18) < B (23) < C (30) ≪ H (89): the three AI arms occupy the foreignising third of the scale; H sits at the domesticating pole. The per-test breakdown shows the texture the composite hides: A keeps the most German proper nouns (T1 = 0) yet naturalises loanwords as much as H does (T2 = 4) — a split signature (keeps names, naturalises loanwords). C keeps the most loanwords (T2 = 2) but anglicises more proper nouns and carries more eye-dialect than A/B. H is the most domesticating on every test.
Table 4 — Choice-clusters (named, with evidence)
| cluster | members | basis (numbers) | evidence (loci) |
|---|---|---|---|
| C1 · The source-tracking trio | A, B, C | AI–AI agreement 55–67.5%; foreignisation 18–30; all keep the montage beat (T4 = 0) | the 18 {A,B,C}|{H} loci: refrain-wording/-layout, suesse, widerklee, privatdozent, streets, einverstanden, frauenliebe, feuerzauber, lyric-rhyme, praemie, ochsen, baerenhunger, schaem-dich, dialect-register, maetresse, feierabend, syntax |
| C2 · The B–C twins (sub-cluster of C1) | B, C | tightest pair, 67.5%; frequently verbatim | kasinotoilette ("casino gown"), querpfeifer ("a martial sound"), feuerzauber ("Magic Fire Music"), hammelbeine ("mutton-legs"), pub ("Fresh Mutton"), coupe ("coupé"), kloster ("Grey Cloister"), volksbegeisterung ("enthusiasm") |
| C3 · The A–C secondary pair | A, C | 2nd-tightest, 62.5% | reh ("fawn"), erfolg ("success"), annettchen (kept), wache ("guard was changing"), spelling (American), du-letter (lowercase) |
| C4 · A, the foreignising edge | A (within C1) | lowest foreignisation (18); T1 = 0 but T2 = 4 | keeps Frischer Hammel, Weidendammer Brücke, Graues Kloster, Schloss, Annettchen (most German proper nouns) — yet naturalises coupé→carriage, Taburett→stool (loanwords) |
| C5 · H, the domesticating pole | H | foreignisation 89; agreement with each AI arm only 12.5–20% | refrain-layout (fused), dialect-register (eye-dialect), all of T1/T5 anglicised, frauenliebe/feuerzauber kept German but lyric rhymed, lecturer, D'accord |
| C6 · A↔︎H thin thread (does NOT lift A above C) | A, H | A–H = 8/40, tied with C–H = 8/40; only 2 loci are A-with-H-against-both-others | coupe ("carriage"), das-recht ("Justice?") — plus shared-with-others: schloss, annettchen, du-letter, molle, spelling, geliebte |
